Here's what we've used, with notes on where they came from and what I've thought about them:
- Preemie prefolds - purchased I think 14 of these (along with some infant prefolds) from a friend - These were pretty useless as actual prefolds, but have been AWESOME for stuffing the tiny pockets, gDiapers, and pocket fitteds. If you have some tiny inserts you wouldn't need these, but this was an economical way to go. Let's not forget that cloth diapering is primarily a money thing for us.
- Infant prefolds - purchased about 4 from a friend and then a full dozen from Go, Baby, Go! These have been fabulous. Absolutely awesome. I'll tell you about my covers next, but I just wanted to add that I use a Snappi for them.
- Wonder Wraps cover - This is a one size cover that I got from Go, Baby, Go! I was shocked when it actually fit Spencer and worked so well! I love one size stuff - I can use it on Spencer one time and Miles the next! I love the look and feel of these covers. It seems really durable.
- Serwa Chic covers - I bought two in ooga booga print from Jen and they could not be cuter. Great leak protection because they have gussets. Great fit and again...so cute!
- Diaperaps cover - I have one from Go, Baby, Go! and it's a pretty good cover! It's very trim, slightly trimmer than the Serwa Chic covers, so it does well under clothes.
- Random other cover - I got this at a diaper consignment sale at Baby Moon. For a small, this random cover is kinda big. It has gussets, but even so, I get leaks. But it's okay.
- Ecology Kids covers - I bought these for $0.50 a pop at a consignment sale 2 years ago before I knew squat about cloth diapering. Not great covers (I don't even think they make them anymore), but they are okay in a pinch for wash day.
- gDiapers - I bought these on a whim a few weeks ago when I went to Babies R Us to get a second diaper bag with a coupon and gift card. They didn't have a diaper bag I liked, so I just went to the diaper section to see if they had anything cloth. They had gDiaper 2 packs of the small ones for $25.99, so with my gift card and 20% off coupon, I paid $2 for them - not bad. I really love the fit of the gDiapers (using a preemie prefold instead of their inserts), but unfortunately the covers get damp rather quickly. I'm bummed about that, because with runny breastfed baby poo, they end up getting soiled often.
- WAHM-made Comet Tails pattern pockets - I got two of these on the DiaperSwappers.com FSOT forum and was able to use them for a short time on their largest setting with Miles. I've got them on the 2nd setting right now for Spencer and have had great luck using them overnight with him! I stuff them with a preemie prefold.
- Fuzzi Bunz (Old Style) pockets - These were in the FFS lot with the Bumkins and had shot elastic. I repaired the elastic in one of them but it's still too big for Spencer. So far we haven't had good luck with Fuzzi Bunz diapers. Maybe the new style is better.
- Bumkins All In Ones - I got 3 of these on the Free For Shipping forum on DS. I think they must be better suited for babes with chunky legs. Spencer is not a chunky-legged baby, so the other day I had a massive explosion wearing one of these. That being said, they hold pee pretty well, so when his legs get a little fatter we'll give 'em another go.
Wow...That's a lot of options. But I don't think all of that cost more than $60-70, and how quickly would you rack up that amount in disposables?
I'm doing more diaper laundry, but that's okay, I needed to wash them more often anyway, so it's not such a big task.
Basically, I'd say it's going really well! I'm still trying to work up enough nerve to use them out of the house, since he goes through diapers so quickly, but we're not out much. We'll work up to it :-)
