No Gain

Just as I expected (but not as I hoped or prayed), Spencer did not gain weight as of today's appointment.  Rather, he lost nearly 3 ounces.  My heart absolutely sank when I saw the numbers.

Our pediatrician didn't seem super concerned, but she did ask that I exclusively pump and bottle feed him until she can see him again on Friday morning.  I believe she wants to get a good picture of my output and what he takes in, and see how that affects his weight gain on Friday.  She said if he still isn't gaining that she would like me to supplement with formula at that time.

I was prepared for this, but it doesn't make it any easier.  I'm already weary of the routine - feed a bottle at X time, then about 45 minutes later, pump, wash parts, then feed again.  I really hope we don't have to do this long-term.

I hesitate to put this "out there" on Facebook, because I know that a ton of people would say "Just give him formula, it's made to make babies gain weight."  (I actually had someone tell me that with Miles...Like I don't know what formula does.)  I realize that babies do fine on formula and I don't think there's anything wrong with that choice or when you have to make that difficult decision to cease breastfeeding because of problems.  However, it's still early and I'm committed to making this work.  Not only that, but I am way too cheap to formula feed.  That stuff is EXPENSIVE!  And I know I'm producing.  I'm not sure what the problem is.  But we'll figure it out.

I'm so sorry you're having to go through this! I know you know all the stuff about eating oatmeal, drinking lots of water, and getting rest (ha!) to help increase your supply. I know I'm not there with you, but my gut is that this isn't a supply issue, you just have small babies with slow weight gain. That's what I'll be praying for, anyway!

I agree with Jen.

I was reminded by a friend yesterday that those growth charts are more accurate for babies who are formula fed. Since my milk has changed, Will has started to fall on the lower end of the growth charts for weight. (breastmilk has a higher fat content in the first 4 months)

I will keep praying for you!
