38 Weeks

Here I am, 38 weeks!  Pregnant longer this time than I was with Miles, by several days!

I've been working pretty hard on getting things ready for little Spencer here at home and have paid for it with lots of contractions!  But honestly, I'm okay with that at this point!

I nearly had a panic attack a little bit ago.  I've been busy today and haven't really been sitting much, so I hadn't been paying attention to baby movements much.  So I started to think "Oh my gosh I haven't felt him!" and was starting to think we needed to head to the hospital to get on the monitors.  I decided to give it a few more minutes before really freaking out.  And sure enough, he started kicking like a wild man in there!

Tomorrow I have another appointment with my midwife and we'll be talking about our birth plan.  Please say a quick prayer that I will actually see her and she won't be out at a delivery.  We really do need to talk about things before I'm there for the birthing!

After the appointment, Brandon and I are planning to go up and tour the Labor & Delivery floor, since we haven't ever seen it.  Here's a list of questions I want to ask:
  • What is the procedure for checking in?  I should call before we come, right?
  • Will I be permitted to wear my own clothes during labor and birthing?  (I'm planning to wear a nursing sleep bra and a loose skirt.  I can't tell you how much I despise hospital gowns.)
  • Are there labor tubs available (Shaina already told me there were) and how is it determined who gets to use them?
  • What is the current preference among L & D staff for goodies?  Cookies?  Brownies?  Cupcakes? (I'm planning to perhaps stop on the way home and get supplies for whatever they might prefer so I'm ready!)
  • Would I be permitted to eat anything during labor (not steak, just something like crackers and fruit)?
  • Any experience with moms using self-hypnosis?
  • What newborn procedures/tests can be done at my pediatrician's office rather than at the hospital (to reduce costs)?  (I need to check with our pediatrician's office to see what they can do there.)
  • Would it reduce my costs if we bring our own diapers and wipes for the baby?  Anything else we can do to make it cheaper?
Those are the biggies that I have, but I might think of more.

How am I doing, physically and emotionally?  Physically, I'm great!  Having some aches and pains from time to time, the stabbing crotch pains and lots of pressure, but I'm certainly not miserable.  I'm taking warm baths at bedtime to help with the hip/crotch pain while I sleep.

Emotionally, I'm also doing well.  I think the 38 week mark is kind of a psychological thing where you start thinking "Oh my gosh it could be any time!" but most likely it won't be for awhile still!  But regardless, he'll be here soon.  And I'm starting to be okay with that!  :-)
