Today was the day of Miles's 15 month well child appointment, but since he was feverish all weekend and draining disgusting green junk out of his nose, we made it a sick child appointment as well.
His stats:
Weight: 23 lbs. 5 oz. (30th percentile) - He has actually been weighing higher than that at home, he has just been really picky about eating with his illness
Height/Length: 32.5 inches (90th percentile!) - WOW, never thought we'd see a 90th percentile for ANYTHING on him!
Head Circumference: 19 inches (75th percentile)
He was a great patient at the doctor today, smiling at everyone, being a big ham. Even when the doctor checked his ears, he did great.
She was very happy with his recent growth spurt and was pleased with the geneticist's report from last month. I asked her about the "history of developmental delays" comment on the geneticist's report. She seemed very confused as well and said that it must have been a misunderstanding, because she doesn't know of any delays that he has had. That made me feel better. She wouldn't lie to me outright like that.
She hadn't gotten a report from the ophthalmologist, so I filled her in on his eye problems, which she had noticed today.
We discussed his eating (mostly a good eater, but sometimes picky), mobility (walking great, practically running, trying to jump), and sleeping (she was very happy to hear that he is sleeping so well now). We also talked about his milk intake (usually about 20 oz. of milk plus cheese/yogurt, which she said was perfect). We talked about diapers -- just in general about cloth diapers and also what he deposits into them :-)
We also talked about his speech development. I relayed that he doesn't say any "words" with meaning, but babbles constantly. I told her that he has said some words by accident, but knows the meaning of lots of words (he will go and get his ball if you ask "Where's your ball?", he will walk to his booster seat if we tell him it's time to eat, etc.). She didn't seem concerned, and she heard his babbles (he points to things a lot and says "Dah!" or "Duh?" which she took notice of). She said that since he seems to be getting the idea of things, just keep reinforcing the words. She said they went through the same stage with her youngest daughter and they taught her a bit of sign language. We had intended on doing baby signing with Miles, it just never quite happened. Maybe we'll try a few words. I have a hard time being consistent with it though.
Finally, when we got to the actual exam, she discovered that he has a pretty serious ear infection in his left ear, close to rupturing. She said (and I appreciated this) that most of the time, it would just take care of itself, but since it was so bad, she did want him on antibiotics. I'm glad she is a pediatrician who isn't so quick to whip out the prescription pad for any ole thing. I'm glad we just needed Amoxicillin this time, gotta love the $4 prescriptions.
We briefly talked about the H1N1 vax and she said her kids probably won't get it since they are home most of the time. Not that she is worried about its safety, she just didn't see a need for them to get it when there are immunocompromised children out there who need it more. I agreed with that, even though I have reservations about the vaccine's safety.
Miles just took his first dose of Amox. and is napping peacefully. We go back in 2 weeks to recheck his ears and get his shots. She didn't want to put him through the shots since he is feeling so yucky already.
All in all, a good visit.
