Sweet Boys

I am knocked over today by the sweetness of my boys.

Miles has just started sleeping in a toddler bed, after learning how to climb out of his Pack N Play (on vacation) and then his crib (second night home after vacation).  Rather than receiving the fight I expected, Miles has adjusted so well.  Sure, he gets out of bed and gets into some shenanigans, especially during naptime, but he is quiet as a mouse in there.  Here are some examples:
  • His very first night in the toddler bed, I was at the grocery store and Brandon was home to deal with any problems.  He put him back into bed one time even before I left for the store.  When I arrived home, Brandon told me that he hadn't heard any more noises from Miles since the first time and he had checked on him just moments ago and Miles was in his rocking chair, sound asleep, with a book on his lap.
  • Last night, I put Miles to bed and he went in happily with no protesting.  I didn't hear him doing anything in there, but just to be sure he was where he needed to be, when we went to bed Brandon peeked in at Miles.  "Did you put a book in bed with him?"  "No..."  "Well, he has one in there now!"  He couldn't tell what it was, but this morning I saw what it was - his Bible.

It's not just the blissful transition to a toddler bed that makes Miles sweet.  Tuesday at the ophthalmologist, he had a terrible time getting eye drops.  Apparently they do burn and sting for a moment, and besides that, he has to be held down to get them in.  Anyway, after screaming and pushing all of us away while he got his drops, when the nurse finished and left, he said "Bye bye!  Thank you!"

Another glimpse at his sweet spirit came last week at the beach.  I believe it was at his birthday party or some other time when he was given something.  I asked him to go over and tell the person thank you and he walked over, looked them in the eye and said "Thank you."  *melt*

Now while Spencer isn't making his mama melt with his politeness, he is sweet in other ways.  Tonight I was carrying him in to get his bath and he looked into my face and grabbed my cheek, grinning as he did it.  I love the feel of my boys' hands on my face.  It's an intimate gesture that says "I know you.  You're my mama."

The boys seem to connect with one another already.  Miles always asks for the baby in the morning before he sees him and always runs to him if he is fussing or crying.  He will frequently come over and hold Spencer's hand and say "Baby.  Hand."  Sometimes I'll see them lying on the ground with their heads nearly touching.  And on vacation, Miles started getting down on the ground with Spencer, holding Spencer's hands up and saying "Hooray!"  (True/Funny story:  I first thought he was saying "Away!", copying me from when I sometimes have to tell Miles to "Go Away!", like when he has just dumped the entire contents of a box of q-tips onto the floor.  I was glad to realize he was saying "Hooray!")

One last gushing "I love my precious boys" story.  Today I was working so hard to get the house perfectly clean and tidy for our landlords.  They are moving their house from "For Sale By Owner" to a realtor and tonight was when they were coming to take pictures for the listing.  After 6 weeks of running here and there with SITS and then a week of vacation, and Spencer moving into his own room, and changing clothing sizes for him, the house was kind of a wreck.  And Brandon was out of town!  Anyway, I was busy.  I was working on a few things in the kitchen when I realized it was very quiet in the living room.  Any mother knows this is usually not a good sign.  I peeked into the living room and saw Spencer on his tummy, just a few inches away from Miles, who was "reading" a book that Spencer had his hands on.  It was really nice to see them quietly doing something together.  It wasn't much and I'm sure they weren't aware of it, but I was.
