Hello, 2010 (Part One)!

I have high hopes that 2010 will not have the same amount of stress as 2009, but it's sure not starting out that way!

I'll back up...

Last Sunday night I started having a really bad pain in my right upper abdomen, right under my breast.  I had no idea what was causing it, but it persisted through the next day.  I called my OB's office Monday morning to see what they wanted me to do about it (wait until my appointment the following day or try to see someone about it right away).

I waited around all day for a call back and after calling THEM back twice I finally heard back from them at 3pm.  They said I needed to see my primary care provider (which I don't have) or find an urgent care or emergency room that day.  So we took Miles over to a friend's house to hang out and we headed to the next town.  We found an urgent care, but they wouldn't see me, since I'm 30+ weeks pregnant.

Our next stop was the ER, as much as I didn't want to go there.  As soon as we arrived, we noticed that there was something amiss with the guy in front of us in line at the ER.  He was yelling about something and threatening a lawsuit.  A few minutes into this, a state police officer came around the corner and asked the yelling guy to put his hands behind his back because he was being arrested for a DUI.  It escalated quickly after that.  He resisted arrest and the officer pulled out his taser gun.  The triage nurse behind the counter called out to us "You all can go around the corner!" and we certainly did.  Drunk Guy was tasered while we cowered around the corner.  It was pretty crazy.

Eventually they took me up to Labor & Delivery, since I'm 30+ weeks pregnant.  They monitored me there and everything looked fine so they sent me back down to the ER.  They did some bloodwork and gave me an IV of Zantac and something else, which didn't help at all.  They said everything "looked all right" from the bloodwork, but that they suspected it was something related to my gallbladder.

My appointment on Tuesday with my midwife (actually not MY midwife, it was another one who turned out to be FANTASTIC) told us pretty much the same thing.  She did some feeling around in my abdomen, did an ultrasound (Spencer has hair!!), and did some swabbing to make sure I wasn't leaking amniotic fluid (I'm not).  She prescribed something else for gallbladder problems, but it doesn't seem to be helping.

Late last week I got a voicemail from the midwife I saw saying that she had received the labwork the ER had done and they hadn't tested something that she thought would be important.  I was a little nervous about this ("What could it be?!") and when I talked to a nurse on New Year's Eve, she said the concern was that they didn't test some things about liver function, and that they wanted to do that in case I am developing pre-eclampsia.  I reported that I didn't have any other symptoms and asked if it could wait until I got home from TN.  She was hesitant but agreed.  As it turns out, I'll be going to see the midwife tomorrow morning so if she still wants the testing done, I'll do it after my appointment.

So that was MY excitement that is still going on...

Which brings me to our ordeal with Miles.  (See Part Two)
