I'm so tired of doctors' offices!
For the past two days, I've known something was up with Miles. More fussy, clingy...Yesterday afternoon, he sat (just SAT!) on the couch with me for 10 minutes with his head on my belly while I played with his hair. He had a 101.9 fever. After a dose of Motrin and a Popsicle, he was doing better.
This morning, fever was back, so another dose of Motrin. Then, I picked him up from the babysitter (he is there 3.5 hours a week) this afternoon and could tell he was MISERABLE. His cheeks were so red and his skin was so hot - I'm calling him the Human Torch right now because he feels like he's going to burst into flames.
I called the pediatrician's office to see what they said and we went as a Walk In. 103 temperature! Yikes!
No ear infections, throat looked okay, flu test negative...So she said "I'd like to run some labwork to make sure there's nothing really scary going on" since she couldn't figure out what was causing the high fever. So she ordered a CBC, CMP, and blood culture. She said "It's probably overkill, but if you miss something causing a high fever, it could be devastating." Words you never want to hear, am I right?
I called Brandon and told him I didn't think I could do it alone (I had images of what the taking of the blood would be like). We went to the hospital lab (to get quick results) and they took some blood. I don't recommend this if you don't have to do it! He sat in my lap and they took it from his right arm. So pitiful. He cried the whole time, but didn't scream or jerk away. He got 6 SpongeBob stickers from the phlebotomist for being such a good boy. I stuck one on his pant leg when I put him in his carseat. Amazingly, he didn't rip it off, just stared at it for awhile.
By the time we got home (after dropping Brandon off at church), I had gotten a call back from the pediatrician. She said the labwork looked good, but he had elevated lymphocytes. She said that could indicate the beginning of mono, but definitely some kind of virus. We'll just be controlling the fever and making him comfy for the next few days until he gets over it.
I asked if I would likely get it from him (we have been sharing Popsicles, after all) and she said most adults have probably had it. I don't think I ever have. I can't imagine that would be a fun way to spend my last few weeks of pregnancy. Apparently symptoms don't show up for 4-6 weeks after exposure, which puts me right at my due date! Would they send a newborn home with someone who has mono?
Miles has been sleeping since we got home almost 3 hours ago. I'm hoping he'll wake up in about 15 minutes to eat some dinner. He can't have more fever reducer until 8:30pm and I'm hoping he'll stay awake long enough to get another dose in.
At least this means I might get some quiet time tomorrow to work on nesting a bit!
